One of the most frequent questions we are asked about Siva Ashram is why we picked Costa Rica over the U.S. or Asia? Well, first of all, Costa Rica is amazing. The people, the environment, the topography and the beaches are some of the most beautiful we have experienced in our world travels. The other simple reason is that we wanted to locate the ashram somewhere easy to get to, in the tropics, near the ocean, along a river, and all of it on a budget. We found all of these things in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is also working hard to take a stand on climate change and has implemented various progressive environmental policies, such as currently running their electric grid on 100% renewable energy. Like all countries, it is not a perfect place, but in our eyes, it’s trying harder than most places to be a more responsible environmental actor.

We picked Nosara because the community is active and diverse, made up of a local Ticos and Ticas (what Costa Ricans have nicknamed themselves), and people from the U.S., Canada and Europe. The town started its own recycling initiative and plant, has various ongoing environmental projects, and has been recognized by the Costa Rican government as a leader in environmental causes.
